Online Goal Tracker vs Todoist: Goals vs Tasks

Todoist is a great task manager; Online Goal Tracker plans and tracks goals as a graph of steps. Here is the real difference and which you need.

Updated August 15, 2026

Short answer: use Todoist to manage tasks — the things you do this week. Use Online Goal Tracker to plan and track goals — the outcomes those tasks add up to. They solve different problems, and many people use both.

Tasks vs goals

A task is a single action: "email the designer". A goal is an outcome that takes many actions in some order: "launch the new site". Todoist is one of the best task managers there is — fast capture, natural-language dates, clean apps. But it stores tasks as a list; it does not model a goal as a plan of steps that depend on one another. That difference is the whole point.

As a task list

Four things to do. Nothing says which is blocked, what can run at the same time, or how close the goal is.
As a plan
Design Content Build → Launch
The same four, with the order in them. Content does not wait for Design; Launch waits for both.

When Todoist wins

For pure task management — quick capture, recurring chores, a tidy today view — Todoist is excellent and hard to beat. If your problem is "I have lots of small things to remember," it is the right tool.

When Online Goal Tracker wins

When your problem is "I have a big goal and don't know where to start," a task list is the wrong shape. Online Goal Tracker lets you lay the goal out as a Goal Plan (GP): steps in sequence, branches that run in parallel, and a clear next action. GoalPlanner can suggest the steps, and sub-goals let any step expand into its own mini-plan. You track progress on the outcome, not just tick off chores.

Use both

A common setup: plan the goal and its steps in Online Goal Tracker, then, if you like, push the immediate next actions into Todoist for the day. The tracker holds the map; the task app holds this week.
